Rodrigo Gracie (born March 11, 1974) is a renowned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor and retired mixed martial artist from the legendary Gracie family. He holds a 7th Degree Coral Belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, reflecting decades of dedication to the art, and is celebrated for winning the 1998 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship.
As a professional fighter, Rodrigo Gracie competed in PRIDE Fighting Championships, where he became one of the top-ranked middleweight MMA fighters from 2003 to 2004. During this period, he maintained an undefeated streak with notable victories over fighters such as Hayato Sakurai, Daiju Takase, Yuki Sasaki, and Daijiro Matsui.

RODRIGO GRACIE’S BIOGRAPHY
Rodrigo Gracie is a proud member of the legendary Gracie family of Brazil, one of the most influential families in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). He is the son of Jiu-Jitsu Grandmaster Reylson Gracie and the grandson of Carlos Gracie, the founder of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
Rodrigo began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 4 and earned his black belt at 18 under the guidance of his father, demonstrating exceptional skill and dedication from a young age. Following his training in Brazil, Rodrigo moved to the United States to teach at his father’s academy in California, sharing authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu instruction with students of all levels.
A few years later, determined to further represent the Gracie name, Rodrigo transitioned into mixed martial arts competition. He relocated to New York City to train under and assist his cousin, Renzo Gracie, at the renowned Renzo Gracie Academy. Recognizing Rodrigo’s exceptional talent and fighting spirit, Renzo personally helped prepare him to compete at the highest levels of MMA.



Rodrigo made an immediate impact in professional competition. In 2000, he fought his first MMA bout in New York, securing victory in just 27 seconds. In 2002, he competed in the prestigious Pride Fighting Championships, where he established himself as one of the promotion’s few undefeated fighters, earning four consecutive victories against elite opponents. Following his success in Pride, Rodrigo sought new challenges by competing in K-1 MMA, facing prominent fighters such as BJ Penn.
Rodrigo later moved to Los Angeles, where he was welcomed by his cousin Royce Gracie. The two trained together and strengthened their family bond while continuing to represent the Gracie legacy.
A gold medalist at the ADCC—widely recognized as the most prestigious submission grappling tournament in the world—Rodrigo Gracie has solidified his place among the sport’s elite. Today, he serves as Head Instructor at the Rodrigo Gracie Martial Arts Academy in Torrance, California, where he continues to teach and preserve the traditions of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu for the next generation.
